FaulknerBrowns lands major job at Northern Irish resort

The architect is part of the design team for the victorious Angelvale consortium, led by investment manager Cubic3, which also includes Richard Murphy Architects, Hamilton Architects and Arup.

The team was appointed by Ards and North Down Borough Council and the Department for Communities to take forward the major project at the seaside holiday destination, which features Edwardian and Victorian waterfront buildings.

As well as providing shops, cafés, restaurants, a cinema, a winter garden and a wellbeing centre, the scheme includes a centrepiece 80-bedroom hotel and public piazza. The concept plans also feature a floating pontoon and water-sports centre in the marina.

The practice claims the wider masterplan will improve connectivity through the existing site and extend the ‘waterside pedestrian route from the banks of Belfast Lough into the heart of the town centre’ while ‘encouraging those in the town centre to extend their visit to the waterfront’.

FaulknerBrowns partner Paul Rigby said: ‘This scheme builds on Bangor’s existing strengths and legacy, and our plans will deliver a 21st-century seaside destination that will support the sustainability of the town centre for years to come.’

Work is expected to complete in 2022.
